Memory Decor

5 ways to put your memories on display
eZine image:

When I first started scrapbooking 12 years ago, I didn’t stray too far from my paper, glue-stick, and 12 x 12 page. As I’ve grown with this hobby, I’ve reached the desire to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. I found that I didn’t want all of my paper-crafts projects to be tucked away in an album and sitting on my shelf. Join me as I share a few projects that go beyond the page.

I found this golf ball holder at a garage sale for one dollar. You can’t see the grooves where the golf balls rest, because I flipped the display case upside down. I spray painted it black and got to work with some of my favorite pictures. I wanted this piece to convey a sense of who we are as a family. Along with a few of my favorite pictures, I included some silly ones too—these showcase what my kids are really like!

Printer's Tray

My friend, Autumn Nguyen, took a similar approach with a printer’s tray that she picked up at a flea market. She removed half of the dividers and added a piece of corkboard on which she could display messages and pictures, yet have the ability change them out frequently to go with the season. I love how she altered this piece to fit the purpose she was striving toward. It is a wonderful welcome piece in her home.

Many of us have special recipes passed down to us that have been tucked away somewhere “safe.” A few of us have even put them all together in one book and may use them from time to time. Have you ever thought to include the stories and the feelings associated with a particular recipe? Autumn does all of this in one beautiful recipe book that she leaves out and available for use in her kitchen.

She includes thoughts on her mom’s kitchen space, what kitchen gadgets they purchased for her at Christmas over the years and how her mom loves to experiment with recipes.

Not only does she include pictures of favorite recipes, she includes pictures of her mom cooking, pictures of people eating and pictures of her kitchen. This is a recipe album that goes beyond the recipes—it shows how food can enrich a family’s life in a positive way.

photo canvas

We’ve all seen the canvas photos that are all the rage. What if you created a canvas photo yourself and were able to add your own special flare and personality to it? My friend Kristen Worden did just that with this fabulous little piece of art.

She included their initial, the number five for the number of people in their family and the year to help pinpoint this special snapshot in time.

This last piece is special to me. I think all of us have the desire to be a better person, whether as a daughter, a wife, or a mom. I wanted a tangible reminder that I could see everyday to remind me of the kind of wife I desire to be.

Maybe you have a special quote or a verse that is meaningful to you and gives you purpose in life. Break out your scrapbooking supplies and make it pretty. You will notice it everyday!

I hope you're inspired to jump out of the box and try something new that you haven’t attempted. You don’t have to use your scrapbooking supplies exclusively in your albums. Bring the pretty out in the open for all to see, and go beyond the page!
