August's Scrapbooker Spotlight

The fun, frilly, and feminine Danielle Flanders
eZine image:

Completely unrelated to Simpsons' neighbor Ned Flanders (mainly because he's a cartoon), the talented Danielle Flanders has been capturing attention in her own right. While scouring the Internet for contributors to our upcoming eBook, Ella's Essential Guide for Scrapbooking Girls,

we couldn't resist this scrapbooker's fresh, feminine style and her enduring focus on telling meaningful stories. We invited her to design an ultra-girly page for our August cover (naturally, it involves shoes), and we pried into her life to bring this exciting profile to you. Read on!

My name is: Danielle Flanders

My family is made up of: me, my husband, Tracey, and my daughters Taylor (age 10) and Kati (age 5). Oh, and our cat Casey, who is a girl also!
~Looks like poor Tracey has been handily outnumbered.

I spend my days: doing house chores, being a mom, and crafting (of course)!

I've been scrapbooking since: my first daughter was born 10 years ago. I wanted to create a baby book for her, and a friend introduced me to scrapbooking and card making.
~Now that's a true friend, er, enabler.

The Cover Layout

My cover layout was inspired by: a family hike around Devil’s Tower, Wyoming, on a visit back home to South Dakota in July. I couldn’t wait to scrap these photos of my daughter Kati in her "hiking outfit." Having girls cracks me up sometimes; every rock we came upon, she wanted to jump up on it and have her photo taken!
~This begs the question: Do our children mug for the camera because we're scrapbookers, or do we become scrapbookers because we have children who love to mug for the camera? Chicken, egg? Egg, chicken?

If girls ruled the world: everything would be pink!

I'd describe my scrapbooking style as: girly and a little bit shabby, but with color! I love swirls, ribbons, buttons, and polkadots—anything soft and elegant looking.

If I could go back in time, I would: have more belief in myself and confidence to do anything I chose. I would have pursued my art a long time ago.
~Everyone out there hear that? Be bold, be confident, and do what you love. Start now!

In 10 years, I hope to be: still making art and taking care of my family. I couldn’t ask for anything better than now.

A Favorite Layout

"I just love this page about my daughter during her dress-up days. She loved these wings, and one day she asked me to take some pictures of her in them! The photos still make me smile when I see them. I love how playful and innocent the page feels, just like I want to remember her at this age."

Supplies: patterned paper (Graphic 45) • stamps, chipboard butterflies (Tattered Angels) • chipboard swirl (Regal) • "Suede" and "Olive Vine" spray mists (Tattered Angels) • flowers (Prima) • alphabet stickers (American Crafts) • 12 x 12 page by Danielle Flanders

People are always surprised to find out that I: am very quiet and shy.

My guiltiest guilty pleasure is: caffeine and chocolate. Not necessarily together, but I will mix them if necessary!
~From our experience, "necessary" can be a very loose term. Bring on the choceine! (Or should we say caffolate?)

If I were a scrapbook supply, I'd be: ribbon, because I am soft (soft-hearted), and I change my mind a lot, so I could be different colors on different days.

If I were to author an eBook, I'd title it: Creative Techniques. I love to think outside the box with scrapbooking items!

If there's one thing I know for sure, it's this: I never knew love and sacrifice until I had my own children.

I never thought I'd: be a stay-at-home mom. I went to college for 6 years and I have two degrees. I never thought I’d have two beautiful girls and be able to stay home with them.
~Confession time: Have all the algebra classes (or trigonometry or calculus) come in handy at all yet? Just curious.

Another Favorite Layout

"This page is one of my favorites because of the warm fall colors and contrast on the page, and also because of the photos, which are some of my favorite family moments we've shared together. I love that they are all together on one page. I've been having fun with different sized photos on my layouts also. Having a printer at home allows me to print any size and print whenever I need to, which is so convenient."

I'm embarrassed to admit that I: am a total procrastinator! I work best under pressure. Well, that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it!

If I could have a superpower, I would like: to be able to grant wishes.
~In that case, we'll wish for super metabolisms and unlimited energy and self-folding laundry and...

One thing I've recently realized is: you can do anything you set your mind to do!

The celebrity I'm told I look like is: Hope from Days of Our Lives (Kristian Alfonso).

The celebrity I wish I looked like is: Salma Hayek.
~We're grateful this isn't the case, actually. Because if it were, we know a couple of husbands who would be on their way to South Dakota as we speak.

My favorite Ella eBook is: I loved Design Workshop by Lisa Dickinson.
