Birthday happenings

At my house, it is my youngest son's birthday. He is turning 10 on the tenth in 2010. Pretty cool! As we have been getting ready, it reminded me that everyone celebrates birthdays differently. I think it would be fun to know what you do at your house. At the Smedley house, the birthday child:

  • gets served breakfast (they pick the menu) in bed and seranaded by the entire family
  • does not have to do any jobs, all day
  • gets to go somewhere fun with family, like swimming, (which is what Caden choose) or ice skating, to a movie, etc.
  • picks the dinner menu
  • hosts a family party with relatives that include presents and cakes and fun
  • goes on a present treasure hunt
  • eats a yummy cake, this year I am making all of them
  • has a kid party depending on the year
  • And that is what we do. It gets exhausting to do this over and over again (five times a year!), but hey, kids need to feel special.

Share what it is your family does.

How do you make birthdays special?

What do you do that no one else does?

Way long ago, someone gave me a castle-shaped Bundt pan. As a result, I bake my boys a castle cake on their birthdays, torches (candles) in the turrets and all.

Happy Birthday to your son! We make a big deal out of birthdays in our house as well. The birthday boy/girl gets to choose what kind of cake/dessert they want, as well as either a homemade supper of their choice or restaurant of their choice. Then of course there's a friend party & a family party. Apparently we're all about dragging out a birthday over several days!
We go all out for my son's bday and do a big themed party, this year he turned 7 and choose to have an army bash...we set up an obstacle course, Seargent Daddy put them through some training, they had to destroy a grenade pinata (by the way every year I swear i am never going to make a pinata again but my little guy pleads and I give in) and we ended with a water battle. Other than the big bash that takes about a month of planning, we usually try to do something special on his actual bday by going out somewhere and letting him choose dinner for the day and reminincing about the years gone by.

You should hire out your husband for theme parties. That sounds like a blast! (No grenade pun intended, of course.)

Happy Birthday to your son! My oldest turned 11 yesterday and our birthday party days sound similar to yours. The child (we have 3) chooses all meals, party that night with family and sometimes a friend party. Yesterday we spent the morning at the skate park as he is into skateboarding and just had a great day celebrating the day we became a family of 3!

As a math teacher, I think it is REALLY cool that your son is 10 on the 10th in 2010. WOW! My birthday was Friday, and I had a little meltdown. So many people wished me happiness and sang to me... but I live with 3 subjects of the male persuasion. Their birthdays include homemade cards, Chuck E. Cheese's, cupcakes, pool parties, sleepovers...we love birthdays. My birthday... well... yeah. Needless to say, I am the leader of the merriment in my home. I gave my, "If I die, no one in this house will ever have a birthday celebration...," speech. Very dramatic. Very unlike me. I reached my breaking point. Today, almost one week later, I have a new stereo system to hook up my iPhone in my car. One male specimen knew I meant business! I do so love birthdays, though!
