Making Cards from Layout Leftovers (+ a Giveaway)

Hello Ella blog readers! My name is Latrice Murphy and I’m super excited to be here guest designing during Card Making Month here on The Daily Trumpet.

Today’s post is for those scrapbookers who are always thinking “I’d love to try making cards”, but then say “I don’t have time.” Well let me tell you, you do have the time and you can do it! This is how I started out making cards and to this day I still do it. I do about 50/50 of scrapbooking and making cards now.

Think about this…have you ever gone to a crop or retreat to work on your scrapbooking and you end up throwing away your scraps because you don’t want to haul them back home? How come no one likes leftovers? (Hee hee) I used to do this until I got a couple stamps to start with and started using those scraps to make super simple cards. I was reusing and it felt great.

I created this layout using the Paper Moon Kit from Studio Calico.

Once completed I had these pieces left over to work with. I pulled a few embellishments in and a favorite Hero Arts stamp. Yes you may pull in some plain cardstock to make your card base. That’s it though! Everything else has to be leftovers.

From those scraps I created two fun cards with minimal stamping and technique. Check them out!

To me cards are about making someone feel good with a special message or sending a hug to someone who is miles away. I could have spent more time and created cards that were packed with the latest techniques and trends, but my cards get the message across and are meaningful to the recipients. And that's good enough!

I hope that you’ve enjoyed this short tutorial and my card share today. As a special thank you to you readers and Ella I have a GIVEAWAY!

Leave a comment on this post to win two full spools of ribbon of your choice from May Arts. You will seriously have the hardest time choosing!

I really enjoy making cards out of my leftovers (no I don't throw them out!) but I like how you make it sound so simple! I have a tendency to overthink them! Would love the MA ribbon! Thank you for the chance!
I almost always make cards from scraps. It's a great way to keep from wasting paper!! And it's fun to use the leftover stickers and embellishments that you didn't use on your layout!
Great layouts and card! I love using up scraps too. The papers and trim pieces are just too nice to throw away.... I keep mine for future projects and can often find just the right touch to finish off a card! Love May Arts ribbons too... a fave! Thanks for a chance to win! DeniseB
I love to make cards from scraps, although I've gotten away from the habit. Thanks for the reminder (and the chance to win!)
I love making cards from scraps - I hate throwing away anything even the tiny scraps so making cards from them is great! Thanks for sharing your cute cards and for the chance to win some ribbon!
I keep all my scraps (the hoarder in me!) in color coded file folders and go to them first when making cards. But I like your idea about making a card right after finishing the LO - great advice. Thanks for sharing :)
I loved reading about how you started cardmaking and I am going to give it a try the next time I finish a layout!
I only throw the small scraps away - everything else is sorted by color into an accordion file, and I always go there first for cards and LOs. But I have never immediately made a card from the scraps of a just finished LO. I should definitely try that!
I love your cards! I'm trying to use my scraps before they end up in the scrap bucket, so this is great inspiration!
I love your adorable layout and the cards are perfect. Thank you for sharing and the opportunity to win. I am a big user of scraps to make my cards but have not tried making a card from a specific layout -- interesting!

What a great idea! I always forget about making cards once I finish a LO, but you are right, you have the matching supplies out and staring you in the face, a simple card is only a few minutes away!
I love making cards from my scrapbooking scraps! :)

I first heard this great bit of advice a few years ago and somehow forgot it ... thanks for the reminder! BTW ... Mr. Clean is perfectly adorable!

I love the idea of making it a regular habit to make cards from scraps--I'm going to have to try and do this regularly!
I'm loving all of the card ideas. Thanks for the chance.

i always SAY i'm going to make a card with the scraps after i finish a layout. I really need to make a bigger effort to follow through!!! thanks for the inspiration
Fun cards! Thanks for the chance to win.
Great layouts and cards! I love how you used the same supplies for both. I scrapbook and make cards, but tend to do them at separate times. I should integrate them more. :)

Such beautiful projects!  I really love the "celebrate" card!

I keep my scraps to the bitter end. I rarely think of making cards though. I should.
