See the Light! Thursday Giveaway

After the CHA-Winter tradeshow, the Daylight company generously offered to send Wendy and I review models of two new lamps we saw at the show. I have to say that I have seen the light about one fact in particular: light quality does make a difference to my creativity, motivation, and color perception.

I had the Daylight Table Top lamp to test in my home. The light was even, natural, and it flooded a surprisingly large space. Wendy Smedley, Elizabeth Dillow, and I crowded into my family room last weekend during a girls-only sleepover, and we all had plenty of light (from just one lamp) to paint our canvases for an art project! (To see our finished projects, visit my blog sometime in the upcoming week.)

The lamp is off in this shot. We're relying on the uneven overhead lights, which cast strong shadows.

The limits of my photography skills aside, you can see how clear and natural the light is. What you can't see is how large an area it lights.

Here's another view, this time showing an optional magnifying attachment arm, which is covered by a white fabric cloth. I had everything out of the box, set up and working within 5 minutes.

Here's the optional magnifying arm. You can attach it or not; it's up to you.

And here's an image from the Daylight website that better shows the scale of the lamp.

I'm used to working underneath an old artists' lamp, circa 1986. (It looks exactly like the lamp in the Pixar logo that hops into place at the beginning of any Pixar film.) The light it casts is very yellow, and it gets so hot that I'm surprised I haven't caught on fire yet. So the difference was amazing! The Lucas household is hooked.

And as for the Smedley household, they're on board as well. Wendy was able to try out the Twist Portable Lamp, which is small and compact and easy to take to crops or move from room to room in your house. It would be great to take to a crop as well (as long as there's an available power outlet) to help combat the unpleasant fluorescent light at many crop venues.

This image, borrowed from the Daylight website, shows the lamp itself better than I could. (You can clearly see how you can angle the lamp to light up your workspace, and how it folds into a tube for easy transportation.) But I did take some illuminating photos of a layout Wendy recently created.

The lamp is off in this picture. But isn't the layout adorable, nonetheless? The journaling says, "I forget you are nine years old SOMETIMES. I know that seems silly, but after all, you do have four older brothers, and they are all teenagers. You know the newest lines from The Office and have a vast knowledge of popular music. I reguse to let you have your own email address or Facebook page until you are older, even though you ask regularly. I do try to do things with you that are age appropriate and sometimes it is just you, me, and dad heading to the park. For now I try to balance the big kid stuff with enough fun stuff for your age because I do not want you to grow up too fast."

Now we'll shed some nice, natural-looking light on the subject. The colors of the layout in this picture are far more true.

Are you convinced? Well, the Daylight Company is offering to give one of each lamp away to a lucky Ella reader! Just leave a comment letting us know what kind of light you use in your scrapbooking (recessed, chandelier, fluorescent, floor lamp, table-top lamp, etc.), and we'll pick two random winners to receive either the Daylight Twist Portable Lamp ($74.99) or the Daylight Table Top Lamp, with magnifier ($129.99). Let's hear it!

p.s. You can still comment on yesterday's giveaway until midnight, April 1! I'll announce winners for both contests on Monday.

Right now i have a table top lamp that is no where near as cool as this Daylight lamp. I would love to win one of these! My fingers are crossed.
a halogen floor lamp lights my space. I'm just waiting till the bulb burns out so I can replace it.

I have a regular floor lamp in my family room. I'd love to be able to see better when I'm working on projects in there.
I use a table lamp in my basement space. It's not ideal.
Light, what light? My setting includes lots of natural light (when the sun is shining) and an overhead ceiling fan light. This lamp would be awesome!
I usually use the clamp lamp on my shelf or a table lamp -- depends on my workspace :)
I use the florescent ceiling light in my office if I'm lazy or I will pull out a desk lamp. I've not seen the Daylight lamps before.
I use a clamp on desktop lamp w/ an adjustable arm... I love the flexability of it, but the quality of light is not great.

I've been longing for a daylight lamp for ages!
I use a one of the eco friendly light bulbs that are in my overhead light - that's it....thanks for the opportunity.
A table top lamp with an energy saving light bulb... that covers an area waaaaaayyyyyyy too small to be useful! Would love to win one of these! :)
yay! thanks for the reminder about choosing good lighting. may go try to dig out my old quilting ott light and see how that works. OR i could just win this new one and pass the old one off to my more quilty mom. either would be better than my regular flourescent overhead ceiling light.
These are such fabulous lamps! I'm working with an old floor lamp that has a fluorescent bulb and an overhead fixture so I could definitely use better lighting in my little studio!
I have a small Halogen lamp on my desk. But that magnifying thingy could do me some good, especially attached to such a great light source!!!
There is no overhead light in my studio, so I have a floor lamp in the corner, a clip-on table lamp on my workspace, and another clip-on lamp hanging from the wall. I would so love to win one of these! Thanks for the opportunity...
Right now I am relying on a ceiling fan light so I would love to win something new! Thanks for the chance!

I have a great big window that provides a lot of natural light but their is also a chandelier type light fixture in the room (it was originally a for dining room) and I do have a small halogen light that I use.
I use natural light in the day time (big windows in my craft room). At night, I have three halogen bulbs above my craft island. They're OK, but this looks awesome. The portable lamp would be great for crops, and for taking to my cabin!
My scrapbooking area is in the basement where I have recessed lighting a teeny ikea desk leamp & no natural light, this lamp looks like it would be perfect for me!

I'm convinced! I'd love one of these. I NEED one!

My current light is one of those black folding arm lights that you clip to the side of the desk. If I need more light, I turn on the overhead ceiling fan light so I really need a new light!!

Overhead track lighting, desk lamp and natural light are all sources of light for me. I have trying to talk myself into buying a lamp similar to these so that I can see colors for what they truly are! And, since my eyes are doing their own thing these days, the magnifying attachment would be awesome (hint, hint!---in case I'm lucky enough to win).

I have a fluorescent floor lamp that gives off light with a horrible blue tint. I would love to have a lamp that produces more natural light :-D

I currently use flourescent lights (I scrap in my basement laundry room). We move in a few weeks though and I will be setting up an all new scrap room. I have no idea what kind of light I'll use there but it will probably need to be table top of some kind. A new Daylight lamp would be perfect! :)
I use halogen bulbs in a table top lamp, but I really, really think I would love one of these!! Thanks for the opportunity to win one.
I use just a normal desk light that doesn't swing as far as I would like it to - but hey - I have a scrapbook table so I'm not complaining!
Kim :)
Wow, what a difference good light makes! I use recessed lighting ... definitely in need of something better! :)
I am using a floor lamp with no shade. To be honest... it stinks!
