It's Elephant Appreciation Day

Happy Elephant Appreciation Day to all, and to all an appreciative night!

Thanks to several alert Facebook friends, we recently discovered the existence of this adorably appropriate holiday, perhaps celebrated only at zoos and Disney theme parks nationwide. (Today is definitely Dumbo's day!) Nonetheless, it is our aim to make this a holiday to rival Arbor Day, if not Presidents' Day, for it's sheer celebratory glee.

And today we celebrate by giving away some poo. (And some other stuff, too.)

Yes, it's really real. Poopoopaper.com creates paper products out of elephant, cow, horse, and panda (panda!!!) manure. And they've generously offered an adorable (and sweet smelling) journal to two Ella readers today!

First up is the elephant mom-and-baby journal in burgundy and made from elephant poo.

Also up for grabs is the elephant silhouette journal, also in burgundy and made from elephant poo. Poo has truly never looked this good. And talk about upcycling! See everything this truly unique company has to offer by visiting poopoopaper.com.

For exra fun, here are two more fun elephant prizes that are not made from poo, but are still adorable in their own right:

Our friends over at cupcaketree.etsy.com are offering one Ella reader a customized, hand-carved elephant stamp created just for her!

Your name's not Annie? Not to worry! If you win, Cupcake Tree will carve the name of your choice into the stamp. Check out all 207 stamp designs currently available for sale at cupcaketree.etsy.com.

And last but not least, Ellen from Owl Paradiso, Thailand, paints beautiful whimsical scenes (often featuring owls) and sells the gorgeous prints in her Etsy shop.

One Ella reader today will win "Love is like an Elephant." This is an 8 x 10 Fuji Crystal Archive matt-finish print of the original oil pastel and acrylic artwork on paper. It's signed and dated on the back of the print. Check out all 193 of udonchow's paintings here.

To enter to win one of the four prizes above, simply leave a comment on this post describing what you most appreciate about elephants and how you plan to celebrate this momentous holiday.

While you're clicking around the web today, stop in and read through our Elephant Trivia page.

But no matter what you plan to do, we at Ella hope you have tons of fun!

(Winners to be announced Monday!)

The elephant is the mascot for my alma mater and favorite collage football team, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Big Al is an awesome elephant!

What I most appreciate about elephants - well, that comparison, I have a pretty little nose! I think I will use it now to smell that great soup I've got cooking for lunch. Happy day to all you at Ella!

I love that female elephants assist each other in caring for their young. They are truly wonderful creatures!
I had no idea it was Elephant Day! My daughter Lorelai will be so excited. She loves the Piggy & Gerald, the Elephant books! I'd love one of the journals! HOw fuN! Thanks!
I love the painting! I work in a children's hospital and it would look perfect in the waiting room. I love the graceful way elephants move...being so big, you would think they would be clumsy--but they really arent! Happy Elephant Appreciation Day!! I think we should petition for a national holiday! But since its not, I have to go back to work! :)

It may be a little silly but I am sure glad elephants don't live in my back yard! They are beautiful to look at but I sure wouldn't want to poop scoop after them!
I appreciate their long memory and social habits. I'll celebrate by refreshing my own memory, i.e., reading my old scrapbooks with my family.
What an eye catching email title!!! I had to come straight from my inbox :) When I think elephant, I think Elmer and all his colorful self. You have to love an animal willing to stand out! :D PS: I LOVE the hand carved stamp and will be checking out cupcaketree shop on Etsy!
What I most appreciate about elephants is that they are said never to forget--which is oh so important for us scrapbookers and memory keepers! :) In honor of the occasion, I shall try to be more aware of the many moments which make up this otherwise ordinary day.
Elephants are such majestic and noble creatures - how can you not love them? I'll celebrate by drawing elephants all day!
I want an elephant! Adorable.
The thing that always amazes me, is their gentle touch. You'd figure as big as they are, thay'd be "heavy handed", but their touch can be gentler than a baby..... amazing!
What I like most about elephants is how they stick together as a family and the aunties help watch over the babies. To celebrate this, I am going to send my aunts an e-card. <3
I love that elephants are so huge but look so gentle! They make a big impact in an understated way (like some scrapbooking!) I'll celebrate by looking through your posted trivia. Thanks for the chance to win!
So cool. Save a tree; write on poo! Love is Like an Elephant would be PERFECT for my daughter's room. Love it! Happy Elephant Appreciation Day!
How fun! What cute journals! As my daughter says, nothing says I love you like poo.

"Nothing says I love you like poo!" LOVE THAT :)

When I was in 7th grade I did a report on elephants and got hooked. Did you know elephants can get drunk? It happens from eating fermented fruit off of trees. Everything about elephants is majestic.
I appreciate their cute little tails! I love it when one elephant holds another elephants tail with its trunk!

I think elephants are cute! :) Love the journals...what a great idea!
I think the question is what DON'T love about elephants!!! They have been my favorite animal for as long as I can remember. I am even sprucing up my craft space and elephants will be at the center of it. So any of these goodies would be EXTREMELY appreciated by me!!! Happy Elephant Appreciation Day!!!
Happy, Happy, HAPPY Elephant day everybody! As a long-time collector of ALL-thing elephant, I am super-excited! The painting "Love is like an Elephant." I have never stated it publicly on this wonderful blog, but I have always been ecstatic when the Elle blog arrives. What a terrific set of prizes! So let's all CELEBRATE THE GREATEST day of all because what I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE about elephants is that SUPPOSEDLY they never forget. (Which is why we scrap... right? so everyone will remember the wonderful memories...)
I love elephants ever since I was a kid thanks to Babar. I love watching these amazing enormous animals at the zoo. I get an even bigger kick seeing baby elephants! Today I intend on making a card that is elephant themed just for the occassion. Thanks for these opps! Really awesome products.
There is so much to love about elephants. I think my favorite bit is just their size. Well, I also am intrigued by the number of people that have elephants in their living rooms - but that is another thing altogether. Great giveaways. Thanks for the links back to their sources.
I think it's really cool how they stamp their feet to find others and they can tell members of their family :)
What a wonderful advancement! Maybe we can invent other ways to use normally non-useful things.
I definitely appreciate elephants--I attended Cal State Fullerton and our mascot was an elephant named Tuffy the Titan!!

I too attended CSF and think of it when I see elephant mascots- I can't help but think of elephants as gentle giants even though I know that they can charge and create havoc.

I adore how elephants hold each other's tails!!
I love elephants and was so thrilled to get to see them in the wild in Kenya a few years ago. Some might think I'm weird for saying this, but I find them so graceful and so hilarious all at the same time. But I think the thing I appreciate most about them is how they lead from behind - the leader, which is usually the older matriarch of the herd, walks behind the herd and urges, guides, coaches, pushes on from behind, all the while accounting for all of the followers and members of the herd. As a woman, this picture of leadership and guidance is so inspiring and a reminder of the kind of leader I want to be in life.
