Liz's Loves for March

Hey ya’ll! I am excited to be back for another year of canoodling with the likes of such amazing people. My heart is swooning as I think of how many amazing submissions we have been receiving since I last posted! I can’t wait to expose my crushes for the month (you’ll heart them too when you see their work), so without further ado:

First up is Mindy Miller with her super springy page “All Grown Up”. I love the bright happy colors and her uses of the scallop circles (super easy to do with punches, by hand, or with a die-cutting system). I can’t wait to mimic her use of butterflies as well. Great job Mindy!

Next is Megan Klauer with her amazing page featuring her cute little bundle Ella. I was amazed when I saw this photo…so captivating! As a photographer myself I love to see pages that focus completely on a photo. One this sweet would be a focal point of any page, but I love that she journaled around it and used her embellishments to draw your eye to the photo. Beautiful page Megan!

Third is Katharyn Brine with her page “Trouble”. This is such a sweet way to showcase her daughters naughty side :0). I love her use of hearts and clean white space. They color scheme is also a refreshing combo to use for girls. Thanks for sharing Katharyn!

Fourth is Heather Innusa with her super cute card “Hoppy Easter”. Her card caught my eyes right away; I mean who doesn’t love cuddly little bunnies? I love that she was so creative and put the googly eyes up top to make a little rabbit-so innovative! Thanks so much for inspiring us to make so cute Easter cards Heather!

Last up is Nicole Pomeroy, my super crush…you know that one you never seem to get over or get enough of? Yea…it’s kinda like that ;0). Anyways, she sent in several amazing submissions and this one caught my eye instantly. I love how she used mini-photos. I love that the title is part of her journaling, and I love how simplistic her layout is with plenty of shebang surrounded by lots of white space.

So all my lovely little loves…please send me your work by emailing pictures of your favorite layouts to submissions@ellapublishing.com! I love seeing your fabulous creations and look forward to ogling your goods (if ya know what I mean). I will see you again in May with my new crushes-you won’t want to miss it!

Liz's Loves for November

Hello to all my Ella lovelies out there!

I cannot believe that my Ella crushing for the year will be over with this post. My wandering eyes have seen so many amazing, beautiful, innovative, and pure genius layouts this year! Thanks so much for staying with me on my love escapades. This month there is no point in beating around the bush...I might as well just get right to it and tell our Ella blogger just how much I love this month's submissions! (CLICK ON THE LAYOUTS FOR LARGER VIEWS AND TO READ THE JOURNALING!)

Our first two crush pages come to us from Nicole Pomeroy:

Although I generally try to spread my love around, I couldn't help but be drawn to both of these pages. In her layout "Playing In The Sand," I think her use of map paper from their vacation is fantastically smart. I love that it plays up the beach location. I also love her use of embellishments and the way the boy draws your eyes to the photo at the bottom.

On Nicole's other page "Super Hero or Crusty Demon?," I love that she plays on her son's ability to imagine and also his different moods and personality traits. I think that cutting out the photos of her son add to the comic book feel of the page and keep the tone light and fun. The creativity of design on this page is truly evident! Great job Nicole!

The next crush of the month is a new lady lovely who caught my eye, Arlene Camacho.

She wooed me with her page, "Through Her Eyes." Her super cute page focused on how different the world would be if we as adults looked at things with child-like eyes. Not only would this be a great topic to challenge yourself with, it is a great conversation starter for a specific family member journaling page. I think I might even try to get everyone's view over Thanksgiving of how things would be different for them, or what they would notice if they were looking at things from a childlike perspective. Arlene also made great use of colored ink spray, pearls, butterflies, and doilies to create a very girly and fun feel.

Next, on Andrea MacDonald's page "September 2010", I loved her use of paper layering!

Not only did she ruffle paper- she distressed and inked the edges, and used punches for multiple edge layering.
I love that her photos are encompassed by paper that draws your eyes to them and that her title and journaling are easy to read. Wonderfully done, Andrea!

Last, but definitely not least, was a submission sent to me by Mary Kadry with the subject "Title Love."

Mary instantly had my attention when I opened her page! She had me in awe of the beautiful colors, and cloud theme--in the middle of fall who doesn't long for summer? I love those little airplanes, and how her title falls around her photo. This is definitely one of those titles I will have to scrap-lift! Thanks so much for the inspiration, Mary!

Well Ella lovelies...I guess this is goodbye for now, so until next time mmmmwwwaaaa!
XOXOXOXOXO
Liz

p.s. To send in your layouts for possible inclusion in a future blog post or eZine article, email them to submissions@ellapublishing.com with "General Submissions" in the subject line (unless you're submitting for a particular page call). Get Textured: Fabric

Get Textured: Fabric

Fabric is all the rage right now...just as it should be.
What else is so amazingly versatile (besides paper that is)?
There are so many ways to incorporate fabric into your paper crafting projects.
Fabric can be used in most of the ways that paper can (looks like I just found a new excuse to shop at the fabric store right after I stop off at my LSS).
It can add dimension, warmth, interest, color, or a neutral palette to jump from

Let's get started!

Nicole Pomeroy illustrated this wonderfully with her layout, "There's no place like home". I love that she mounted her photo on plain muslin. It adds an earthy element that both grounds her photo and draws your eye right to it.

Adding dimension with fabric is now easier than ever with so many companies creating ready to use products. One of my new favorites are fabric/ribbon roses like seen on Courtney Meyer's page, "Your favorite summer dress".

You can also buy an assortment of individual fabric flowers, canvas accessories, and crochet flowers/doilies. Doilies can add instant dimension and can be found cheaply at most thrift stores (or for you crafty ladies out there-made pretty inexpensively).

They can be stamped, sprayed, dyed, inked, embellished, ect.-until your hearts content!
I love the simple elegance Stacey Hansen added to her page with her use of a doily flower on her layout, "Everyday Bravery".

Fabric can be hand made into almost any embellishment. Any fabric or ribbon scrap that you have on hand could add a punch to your layout.
Besides the things listed above fabric can also be used for:

  • Shapes (like leaves out of felt for a tree)
  • Puffs (gather the center and leave ends out-great for lightweight fabrics like organza and tulle)
  • Letters
  • Tags (great for heavier weight fabrics-especially if writing on or stamping)
  • Journaling spots
  • Handmade embellishments
  • Thread or Twine for journaling lines
  • Sewing scraps on to pages
  • Folding
  • Twisting
  • Triming around a photo or whole page

One of my most favorite techniques right now is making ruffles (although for those who don't want to make their own their are plenty of pre-made ruffles on the market right now). I loved the way Nicole Pomeroy used ruffle layers as a background for her adorable 'little bubba' photo on her page, "Sew Clever".

Gina Johnson also used a folding or ruffling technique on her page, "You named me".  I love how she layered hers with scallop trim over the top for an extra punch.  You could also mimic Gina's page with scalloped ribbon, and applique or iron on stitched flowers.

Courtney Meyer's also used folding on her layout, "Pool Boy".  I think the ribbon really made her sun embellishment pop and added extra visual interest.

Lastly...on my Halloween page I used scrappers floss and a hole punch to make spider webs, a fishnet stocking that I found at a thrift store to add a little spooky dimension to my journaling spot, and layered ribbon to pop my quote block.

(If you tend not to use fabric because it is hard to cut you can stiffen it with Mod Podge or similar products, or because it is hard to attach you can use spray adhesive/ribbon tape/hot glue/glue dots/brads/clips.)

I hope all of these amazing projects have got you trying to find ways to add texture to your pages.  Thanks for sticking with me through our 3rd and last week of adding texture to your paper projects...I hope you had fun and have been inspired to try something new.

Remember, all you need is a little paper, fabric, or charms and you can take your pages to a whole other dimension---pun intended ;0).

Happy Crafting!!
Liz

(p.s. Send pictures of YOUR projects to submissions@ellapublishing.com, and you might just end up as my November Love!)

Get Textured: Charmed

Oh So Charming

n.
1. The power or quality of pleasing or delighting; attractiveness: a breezy tropical setting of great charm.
2. A particular quality that attracts; a delightful characteristic: A mischievous grin was among the child's many charms.
3. A small ornament, such as one worn on a bracelet.
4. An item worn for its supposed magical benefit, as in warding off evil; an amulet.
5. An action or formula thought to have magical power.

No worries, you're not in for an English lecture, but I found it interesting that the meaning of the word charm fit so well with this weeks texture feature. Not only does it mean using a small ornament to adorn your paper crafting items, it also helps your pages to become more pleasing, delightful, and attractive.  Who knew something so small could carry such a big bang? Secretly I even agree that adding small dangling trinkets can add a bit of magical mystic...which brings me to this weeks feature on my Halloween page.

Those lovely little charms are actually bobby-pins that I used to attach my letters.
Not necessarily what you would think of for a charm, but charms can be found in all shapes, colors, sizes, textures, and materials.  I found these little bobby-pins on sale a Jo-Anns years ago...they were such a good deal that I knew I would eventually find a use for them. I was planning on pulling them off the bobby-pins and dangling them from the letters, but using them to attach my letters instead saved a step and added a bit of pizzazz.

Charms can be used on a variety of projects to add a little extra something...think of it as frosting on the cake.
They are so easy to use as well, some ways include:

  • Attached to ribbon
  • Hanging from other embellishments
  • Stacked one upon another for a chain link effect

  • Bindings of Scrapbooks, or on mini-album rings
  • Mini-album ribbon place markers (add charm to the end of ribbon bound in book to mark place or highlighted pages)
  • Spiders dangling from webs
  • Attached to hat pins in flowers
  • Creating string line (clothesline or pennant line)

(Just like Angela did with her page "Celebrate Fall")

  • As gift tags
  • On a safety pin though paper layers
  • Stacked one upon another for a chain link effect
  • From torn paper curls
  • On book covers to identify what it contains
  • Hanging through punch outs on pages or card fronts
  • Dangling from words

I hope these photos and ideas have inspired you to lead a "semi-charmed kind of life" because you can never go wrong by adding a little enticement to your projects. It is far to easy to be charming when you want to...so next time when you're stuck add a little ornamentation to your crafting and see how far it can get you!

Join me next Friday for our last installment in our Getting Textured series: Fabric. Until then...add a little texture to your life (and send your projects my way via ellasubmissions)!

Get Textured: Paper Style

Get Textured: Paper

I am so excited to be with ya'll today from clear out in windy Wyoming country!  This post is kicking off a series of posts and challenges dedicated to creating texture on your pages.

I created this Halloween layout to showcase the 3 texture techniques that will be our Friday features: paper, charms, and fabric. This week we will be focusing on paper layers. There are so many ways to achieve texture with paper. And the best part about texturing with paper is that it's cheap and so versatile.

You could say that my layout hit the weights and 'got ripped' (hehe...a little humor for my PE teacher hubbs). But in all seriousness, tearing several sheets of paper and layering them is an easy technique that grants immediate texture results.
I also like to ink each of my layers to ensure that they stand out. Tearing and distressing can be done a variety of ways and
there are tools out there to make it easier; I, however, have found that my fingernail works best for me (I never have to look for it). I also like to use the Precision File Set by Basic Grey when I need to sand or file thick papers or accents.

Other ways to create layers with paper include:

  • Painting
  • Misting
  • Crinkling
  • Inking
  • Chalking
  • Stacking
  • Folding
  • Cutting and layering with decorative edges
  • Sewing multiple layers together
  • Punching (using puch-outs on top of negatives as pop-outs and the negatives alone as overlays)
  • Multiple strips
  • Mat layering
  • Sanding
  • Layering tone on tone with multiple textures
  • Rolling
  • Popping paper features (layering the accents of patterned paper with 2 sheets of the same paper, cut shapes from one and adhere it to the other with a pop-dot)
  • Color Blocking
  • Embossing
  • Overlays

Thanks Rita for this example of popping paper!

Awesome use of paint by Valerie Mangan (an Ella friend) on this Go West layout!

Yeah Keshet, way to layer decorative edges to add texture! (Keshet is another Ella friend.)

Layering patterns can be tricky, but Jenni nailed it with this layout! (Yes, she too is an Ella friend!)

For me, I found that the best way to layer with paper and get big results is to stick with similar colors and use repetition.  I like to use papers within a similar line because it takes out most of the guesswork and matching. I think mixing multiple patterns with similar color tones creates the biggest effect and keeps it from becoming distracting. I enjoy clean pages, so I try to keep my texturing in clusters-much like what you would do with embellishments...small and poignant with understated punches.

Regardless of what your texturing style is, never be afraid to try something new...it's only paper, and you might just find a new groove. Lastly, remember...if you are ever stuck and looking for a way to pop your pages, do like my husbands basketball players and "tear it up"!

This beautiful altered box was submitted by the talented, Katherine Bley, can you believe the roses are handmade? Wow!

I hope all of these amazing pages have left you inspired, because I want to issue ya'll a challenge to try one of these paper texture techniques...and send it my way (along with your submissions for charms and fabric) to submissions@ellapublishing.com with the subject line "Texture Challenge."

Until next week...Happy Scrappin'!

Liz's Loves

Hey Ella Loves...I've been missing ya'll!
(Switch your brain to teenage mode with me for a minute..will ya?)
You know how it was when you had a crush and you couldn't see them for 'like the whole weekend'...yea, it was kinda like that ;0). Anyway, I am so excited to be back with Liz's Loves!  I have some amazing submissions to show you this week...so without further ado lets get to it shall we?

First off is Nicole Pomeroy with her page "Grub Boy". I love how clean this layout looks.  You can help but go right from the blue twigs to that adorable photo! Nothing makes a page more than white space and great flow. Fabulous job Nicole!

Next up is Donna Jannuzzi with her layout entitled, "These Days". I love her photo usage!  Wallets and photo booth shots never get old...especially when you repeat them like she did. I love the colors she used too, draws you right in. Nicely done!

Our next page is brought to us all the way from Australia by Katharyn Brine.  She has titled it "Big Bed" and tells the story of how her daughter moved into her big girl bed at 27 months. I love the color combo that she used and oh my goodness...isn't that monkey adorable?! Thanks for inspiring us, Katharyn.

This next layout by Karen Grunberg, is so eye catching with the clustering!  She calls her page "Building Blocks"...and I would say that is exactly how I plan on using this page, as the building blocks for my next creation.
I love the pops of yellow, teal, and red.  All that white space makes me want to know what this page is all about...and topping it off with mini-photo snippets is icing on the cake. Well done indeed!

Lastly, we have an amazing page by Christy Arthur. I am sooooo in love with her photo editing-truly amazing photos.  In her layout "Ordinary Day", I think Christy does a phenomenal job at including the ever popular pin-wheel.  I love the muted tones and nostalgic feel of this page. Way to knock my socks off girlie!!

Ella readers...I love you more and more with each submission! You guys are amazing, so please keep your submissions coming my way. See ya next month my lovelies!
XOXO
Liz

P.S. Check back on Friday I am hosting a three week challenge series all about texture- see you then!

Liz's Loves

Hey Ella Loves you are in for a treat today!
Your submissions have been keeping me mesmerized and this month was no exception.
We had some amazing submissions and I can't wait to share my crush list with you.

First off is Nicole Pomeroy, with her layout "Old Soul"; second is Keshet Starr, with her card "Tweet"; third is Mindy Miller, with her layout " My Lens"; next is Hera Frei, with her layout "Sleep Over"; and last-but not least-is Diane Herman, with her layout "My Sister".

I attention was immediately pulled to Nicole's layout, "Old Soul". Not only is her daughter adorable, but I love the branch she used and all the texture she created by stacking paper behind her photo! You can find more wonderful layouts by Nicole at:

I love-love-love Keshet's ingenuity of using an amazing new product for such an outside the box project. Rose flower ribbon for a birds nest-pure genius! It makes me want to pull out my new ribbon shipment and get started. You can find Keshet's amazing talents at her blog.

I was absolutely drawn to the super cute baby grin on Mindy's page. I love that she took a different journaling perspective and talked about why we take photos. Not just because we love to look at them, but because we are capturing memories. Well said...well said indeed! Mindy will continue to inspire you at her blog.

Hera, my dear, I LOVE that you took me up on my quirky challenge and knocked it out of the park. I love the twist that you threw in with writing it from his point of view, but through your eyes...that is exactly what this challenge was about perspective! You can find more layouts from Hera at her Studio Calico gallery.

Diane's page with her daughters was so heartfelt...how could I not love it? I was enamored with the letter from her 18 year old daughter to her 6 year old daughter. It doesn't get much more tear-jerker...isn't that a moment that all parents dream of? I love it Diane, thanks for giving a whole different perspective on scrapping. Thanks for sharing Diane.

Lastly ladies, I wanted to leave you with a super quick page I made for my perspective layout challenge. It's about a time not too long after my husband and I had gotten married when he and his dad decided to go hunting and they didn't come home when they were supposed to. To make a long story short, they were fine and a little shocked that we had called search and rescue. It was a long scary night...that now makes for a hilarious story and scrap booking page.

I hope you all enjoy this months Liz's Loves, and that they inspire you to get creative...you never know, next month you might see your name on my crush list!

Hugs!
Liz

Liz's Loves for July (with a challenge!)

Hello all my Ella loves out there in blog land! I sort the layout submissions here at Ella Publishing Co., and once a month I guest blog to share my favorites from the month.

Without further ado, this month's Loves are: Andrea MacDonald, with her layout "Magic Garden"; Katie Squires, with her mini-album; Jennifer Alfonso, with her layout "Sweet Summer"; Reyanna Klein, with her layout "Joy and Me"; and Mindy Miller, with her layout "iwonder".

*First: I loved how Andrea added so many textures and layers to her layout! I love the feeling of a picnic table with the cloth and the cute little smiles of the fruits. Oh, and that frayed paper edge in red is just perfect. If you want to see more of Andrea (and I know you will) check her out at andreasmetta.blogspot.com.

*Second: I found Katie's mini truly inspiring!! The handmade burlap cover is genius...and as she said in her submission, "I had made a little pile of strawberry themed scrap supplies for when we would go strawberry picking this summer. We went this past Monday only to discover that the season was closed.  We picked raspberries instead. I still made the mini book that I had been planning, filled with strawberry embellishments. I like it, kind of cheeky." Cheeky indeed...and when life gives you, um, berries, make a mini. You can see more of Katie at katarooskitchen.blogspot.com.

*Third: I thought that Jennifer's page was so innovative using the pennants in her flower! Finding a new way to use a very popular item takes some serious outside the box thinking. I also really love that color combo, so summery! You can find more inspiration from Jennifer at jenniferalfonso.blogspot.com/.

*Fourth: I was instantly smitten with Reyanna's layout! I love the colors and I am anticipating big time stealing her envelope technique; you never know when you're going to need to hide a love note on a page! She states, "To spruce up the envelope a bit, I opened it up and added patterned paper under the flap. I punched small circles and then used a hole punch to punch them again, so they'd fit perfectly over the clasp circles. I made sure that the words 'child' and 'memory' were visible when I punched the circles. Then I just added buttons (with Glue Dots) and some journal strips!" Wonderful, really. I love new ways to use old ordinary things! You can find Reyanna at sunshineandwonder.blogspot.com.

*Fifth: You could say it was love at first sight with Mindy's page! Look at that scotch tape! Who knew an office staple could pack such a punch? I seriously *heart* the circles as a background with her main photo in the corner; it makes me want to know the story behind the hat! You can see more amazing layouts from Mindy at mysecretheart.typepad.com.

And Now for a Few Words About August
I decided I'd like to issue a fun and exciting challenge for our August Liz's Loves! To help you understand the reasons behind the challenge, I want you to escape with me into one of the most popular love stories of our day. So, indulge me if you will for a minute. (Twilight fans, you're going to love this! Non-Twilight fans, stay with me because there will still be an incentive for you at the end!)

"About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him, and I didn't know how potent that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."

"You are my life. You're the only thing it would hurt me to lose."

"Isn't it supposed to be like this? The glory of first love, and all that. It’s incredible, isn't it, the difference between reading about something, seeing it in the pictures, and experiencing it?"

"For almost ninety years I've walked among my kind, and yours...all the time thinking I was complete in myself, not realizing what I was seeking. And not finding anything, because you weren't alive yet."

I've read the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer and was enthralled by it, like millions of other readers worldwide. I loved her ability to put in to words how her characters were feeling. I loved how smitten Bella was with Edward, even though she knew she shouldn't be, and I could feel Edward's pain in knowing she was untouchable! However, even as enthralled as I was after I read the books, I put them on the back burner of my mind. (I still haven't even seen the third movie yet!)

But, while I was at the library a couple of days ago, I picked up a Stephenie Meyer novella, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, and I was enthralled all over again. It tells the backstory of a very minor character from the second book in the series, Eclipse. This then inspired me to finally read Meyer's partially finished fifth book in the series, Midnight Sun, which was leaked online and so it's never been officially released. It tells the story of the original Twilight book, but from Edward's perspective instead of Bella's. (I struggled with wanting to read this one because I wouldn't be able to finish and that drives me bonkers!)

Fortunately though, as I was reading, inspiration struck me... Do I ever scrapbook from someone else's perspective? Stephenie Meyer has now been able to recreate the same story through three different characters' perspectives. And she turned it into even more than a he said/she said exercise. It captivated me each time—truly amazing!

Okay, now that you've indulged me, I'm sure you're wondering how this plays into Liz's Loves. Well, here's the scoop: for this upcoming month of Liz's Loves, I want to see pages that are told from a different perspective other than your own. Or you could even go a little Stephenie Meyer on me and show a couple different perspectives on one page. Most of all, I want you all to have fun and try something new to spice up your scrapbooking life!

Of those submissions, I will pick my three favorites, as well as my two other loves for the month. All five loves will be featured on next month's blog post and will receive a discount for some Ella gear. Just email your submissions to submissions@ellapublishing.com, with "Perspective" in the subject line so I'll identify it right away. Deadline: August 16.

I hope this post and my amazing loves have left you inspired! I can't wait to be inspired by all of your challenge pages. You know you just might be my next crush of the month (along with my favorite Twilight hottie)!

XOXO
~Liz

Liz's Loves for June!

Hey all you Ella readers out there! I am so excited to announce my Love's of the month!

There were so many great submissions, how was a girl to choose? I finally narrowed it down to fuve loves...(even though I do secretly love you all): Keshet Shenkar, with her layout "Sunny Disposition"; Autumn Nguyen, with her layout "Hat Fetish"; Diane Herman, with her layout "Sofa"; Nathalie Leonelli, with her Mini-album "10 Favorites";  and Monika Wright, with her altered information book.

#1

I was completely drawn to Keshet Shankar's page from the moment I saw it, you could say it was love at first sight-haha! I love how Keshet used those funky new and trendy flowers to make a little cluster with a huge punch on her page! I especially love the little yellow flower and her use of yellow in general, which is great for adding a big pop in a subtle way and it speaks to the title of her page so well!

#2

My title love and layout sketch love for the month were found in the same layout, by Autumn Nguyen. Wow! That bright title totally caught my eye! I also love that she was able to get so many photos on 1 page without losing any style or making it cluttered.

#3

Diane Herman spoke to me with her layout "Sofa" because of her heartfelt and to-the-point journaling, but also check out that angle she used for her photo! Ella has been doing Friday photo lessons over the last few weeks, and with this photo Diane nailed it! The angle of the photo makes you want to know what it is all about, and then she knocked it out of the park with her journaling style. (BTW isn't her TV stand to die for?...I promise I don't have wandering eyes...I was really focusing on the layout-swear!)

#4

I love this innovative new idea from Monika Wright! She took an old album that she wasn't using and turned it into a treasure. It makes me so sad to think that I just threw one like this out; maybe I will have to go buy another just to make this. I love the simplicity and the paper! A one-stop-shop to write all her notes down = one fabulous idea.

#5

Last but not least, I love that Nathalie Leonelli took up my last challenge to create a mini-album, and man-she did it with style! I love the shape of the album that she made for her son, it makes it so inviting that I want to stop by her house and peruse through the pages! It is so boy with the colors and repeated sprocket shape, well done lady love number 5!

Great job ladies...you've had me swooning all month long. Make sure you check out their work by clicking on their blog links...you might just fall in love!

Until next month...
Liz

PS...make sure you submit this month-you might just put me under your love spell!

  • All you have to do is send in those submissions!
  • Stop by the third (sometimes fourth) Monday of each summer month to read all about my loves, and let me know what you think of my picks.
